Ocean Park is cultivating a new generation of environmental leaders today as its annual Seahorse Rangers Pledging Ceremony unfolds. Bringing together school principals, teachers and students from more than 110 schools, this year’s event marks a significant evolution in student-led conservation. Held concurrently with Hong Kong’s first large-scale Local Food Festival hosted by the Ocean Park Conservation Alliance under its Farming at School initiative, students co-hosted 20 booths with local farmers at Ocean Park’s entrance area to highlight the local farming community and promote sustainable living to the public.
Gracing the event today, Diane Wong, Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, HKSAR Government, delivered an address to the audience. She remarked at the event that she was delighted to see students from kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools all respond enthusiastically to the Seahorse Rangers campaign. She thanked the Seahorse Rangers who, in their triple capacities as environmental ambassadors, young farmers, and advocates for local fisheries and agricultural products, inspire schools, families and communities to practise waste reduction and recycling, support local produce and the “Eat Local” culture, forging a greener future.
During the ceremony, students of all ages pledged to inspire their classmates, families and the wider public to embrace conservation, embarking on a year-long journey of impactful action to safeguard Hong Kong’s environment and biodiversity.
“The remarkable growth of the Ocean Park Conservation Alliance and Seahorse Rangers, now engaging over 700 schools and 14,000 teachers and students, powerfully reflects the education sector's dedication to sustainable development and the effectiveness of our conservation education programmes. Ocean Park is particularly thankful for the Environment and Conservation Fund’s support, which has significantly expanded our reach to kindergarten students, enabling even our youngest learners to gain vital conservation knowledge,” said Paulo Pong, Chairman of Ocean Park Corporation.
“We are incredibly excited to launch the Local Food Festival. This represents a pivotal shift, empowering our Seahorse Rangers to actively participate in sustainable food systems. It is truly about cultivating a new generation of environmental stewards deeply connected to the land and their food. I wish all students robust growth, just like nature itself,” Pong added.
Hong Kong’s first large-scale, school-organised Local Food Festival
The Seahorse Rangers Pledging Ceremony culminates in Hong Kong’s first large-scale, school-organised Local Food Festival, under the Farming at School initiative — a new flagship activity introduced to primary and secondary schools as well as kindergartens across the city by the Ocean Park Conservation Alliance in school year 2025–2026. It provides students with practical agricultural skills and an in-depth understanding of the local agriculture industry, as they learn to farm through hands-on, immersive experiences at local farms.
Held at Ocean Square with free admission, this vibrant public event sees Seahorse Rangers, working as “farmer trainees”, collaborate with local farmers to promote their cultivated products, with sales proceeds directly supporting local agriculture. Participants passionately advocate for low-carbon living and encourage the public to embrace the “Eat Local” culture, fostering a stronger connection between consumers and their food sources.
Seahorse Rangers Day
Further enhancing engagement, a new established Seahorse Rangers Day to be rolled out this year encourages Rangers to organise conservation advocacy activities on their campuses, disseminating vital conservation messages to their entire school communities through diverse events. They are also encouraged to share activity content on their schools’ social media platforms to further promote conservation to the general public.
Seahorse Rangers, a core campaign of the Ocean Park Conservation Alliance and aligned with Ocean Park’s Mission R, fosters students’ passion for conservation through experiential learning outside the classroom.
